Born on Hessle Road, historically linked with the fishing industry, Gordon brings over 15 years of experience to his practice. Representing insurers, large and small companies locally, nationally, and internationally, Gordon also provides dedicated representation for individuals

He has been fortunate enough to acquire experience and with it, expertise, in a number of practice areas. Gordon is instructed on cases in the County Court, High Court, Commercial and Admiralty Court as well as the Court of Appeal. His down to earth nature and ability to explain complex legal issues in plain English are well received by his clients. Gordon is known for being conscientious and thorough as he strives to reach the best possible outcome for his clients.

Commercial contracts & contract disputes

This forms a large part of Gordon’s practice. It was an area of particular interest at University and throughout practice, Gordon has been regularly instructed on all manner of contractual issues ranging from the supply of goods and services, construction contracts, insurance contracts and shareholder agreements to contracts for the exportation and importation of goods such as truck parts and cooking oil.  

Gordon is often instructed to review and advise on contractual interpretation, as well as, drafting terms and conditions for his clients.

Regulatory

Usually in the Magistrates’ Court and occasionally in the Crown Court, Gordon has been instructed in the defence and prosecution of marine regulatory matters.  His experience in health and safety as well as criminal procedure has also resulted in Gordon being asked to represent clients who are being investigated and/or prosecuted by shore side regulatory bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive and Local Authorities.

Other areas

Working in one area has often had the domino effect of providing Gordon with knowledge, experience and expertise of other disciplines.  Other work areas include negligence, professional negligence, claims in bailment, restitution and property disputes.

Shipping & Transport

For several years, Gordon work as a lawyer in shipping and transport. On what is known as the ‘wet’ side of shipping, Gordon was regularly instructed by P&I Clubs, to act in the defence of shipboard casualty claims including fatalities. This occasionally involved on site investigation when Gordon would be required to attend onboard ship and gather evidence with a view to advising the Club and Shipowner on issues of liability both in a civil and regulatory context.

The experience gained here allowed Gordon to expand his practice into marine regulation and the defence of personal injury claims in general.   Throughout his time, Gordon also gained experience in ship collisions, salvage and goods in transit (cargo claims) by road and by sea.

Notable cases in which Gordon has acted include:

Lyme Bay Shellfish Ltd v Owners and/or Demise Charterers of MV WESTWIND II [2013] EWHC 1060 (Comm) – where a vessel had negligently collided with an oyster and mussel farm.

Huscroft v P&O Ferries Ltd [2011] WLR 939 – a case concerning the case management powers of the Court in the context of security for costs application.
